When considering the different places I have lived, Los Angeles in the early-90's still ranks highest on my list for having the best music scene. Just about any band that was touring came to LA as it was a magnet for artists seeking proximity to the city's music venues, recording studios, and record labels. Further, the city had great record stores and what seemed like an infinite number of clubs. For someone like me, who loves music and photographing bands, it was a great place to be.

In addition to touring acts, the city's local scene was bursting at the seams with homegrown talent. Some of my favorite LA bands from this era included: Thelonious Monster, The Muffs, Fishbone, X, The Havalinas, Jane's Addiction, Claw Hammer (Long Beach), and Rocket From The Crypt (San Diego). At one time or another I photographed all of them - except Jane's Addiction, at venues including Club Lingerie, Al's Bar, Raji's, Macabe's Guitar Shop, and The Roxy.

One of my favorite local live bands from early-90's Los Angeles was Trulio Disgracias. Founded by Norwood, the bass player from Fishbone, the band functioned as collective of LA based alt-rock, ska, funk, and punk musicians who would get together to jam and play the occasional concert. Just about every Trulio show featured different guests. You never knew what to expect - accept that it would be chaotic and a whole lot of fun.

These pictures were taken at a Trulio Disgracias show at the downtown venue Al's Bar. They feature Angelo Moore from the band Fishbone and a vocalist named Vicki Calhoun. I think the year was 1992.

01. Angelo Moore | Al's Bar, Los Angeles | 1992

Angelo Moore is a musician whose contributions and influence far out pace his notoriety. As a founding member of Fishbone (Vocals, Sax, Theremin) he helped create a unique genre of music that fused ska, punk, and funk into a new and groundbreaking sound.

02. Vicki Calhoun | Al's Bar, Los Angeles | 1992

Los Ángeles-based singer and background vocalist Vicki Calhoun is best known for her work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' album Mother's Milk (1989) and the Fishbone album The Reality of My Surroundings (1991).
