About Dope Pics

Dope Pics features the photography of Atlanta based photographer Howard Levenson.

The Fuse Was Lit

I started taking photos as a teenager after receiving a Canon Canonet QL17 camera as a gift.

In my early-20's I took a single-semester photography class at Parsons art school in New York. That class taught me how to develop and print black and white film. It also enhanced my interest in making photographic images.

All these years later, images of children playing in a school yard in NY's east village - that were on the first role of film I processed at Parsons - are among the best images I have created.

The fuse was lit.

Photography Is Where You're At

From my experience, more than anything else, photography is about where you are at. This is for obvious reasons. You cannot photograph something if you are not physically present. Where you are and where you choose to go matters. It ultimately determines what you can and cannot photograph.

Geographically, my 20's were divided almost equally between NYC, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Relocating had a profound influence on my photography. Each city provided unique opportunities.

While living in New York and Los Angeles, I focused on street-photography. I also saw a lot of live music and whenever possible photographed the bands I loved.

While living in Phoenix, I worked on two recurring themes; rodeos and working-girls. I shot both of these subjects exclusively with black and white film. During this time I had access to a professional darkroom and spent countless hours alone in the dark, processing film, listening to music, and making prints.

I left Phoenix in 2000 and spent a few years in Brooklyn. Then, in 2003, a 10-day visit to the Caribbean island Virgin Gorda ended up turning into more than a decade as a resident of the British Virgin Islands. When I moved to the Caribbean, I was sending film via FedEx to a lab in the USA. Around 2010, I finally made the transition to digital photography.

I currently reside in Atlanta, Georgia. Most of the images on Dopepics were taken during my travels. I never lack for inspiration when visiting somewhere new. As a photographer I am most fulfilled when experiencing new places and cultures and distilling my experiences into Dopepics.
