In art and photography, a landscape is defined as the visual depiction of natural or man-made outdoor scenery. In nature, the scenery might include mountains, rivers, and forests. In cities, where we are surrounded by tall buildings, the street level environment is where we focus our gaze. Since the majority of my photography takes place in urban environments, storefronts have become my landscapes.
In this landscape, the facade of Republic Cafe in Portland, Oregon is a study in composition - evoking the grid structure of a Mondrian painting. The tree adds a natural and tranquil element into an otherwise man made urban environment.
