Our Lady of Guadalupe is a representation of the Virgin Mary associated with an apparition to an Indigenous man named Juan Diego. The vision happened, in what is now Mexico City, in 1531.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is deeply tied to Mexican identity and the Catholic faith in Latin America. Throughout Mexico, religious iconography is a common theme in the work of artists and artisans and this depiction of the Virgin Mary is ubiquitous throughout the country.
I found this mosaic embedded into the wall outside a home in the Polcano neighborhood of Mexico City.
