Clarksdale, Mississippi is known as one of the birthplaces of blues music. When you visit Clarksdale today it's not hard to imagine how blues music took root. This impoverished city is surrounded by poor farming communities with fields of cotton, tobacco, and soy beans as far as the eye can see. In the city's commercial district many of the buildings are dilapidated and vacant. This photograph, taken in 2024, features a vintage neon-sign directing people to Haggard Drug Store. The sign's existence and worn patina are an excellent metaphor for the time-worn city where it is located.
